Lesson #1

Nahum, hard at work, teaching his apprentice.

Nahum: Today's lesson is...

how to look regal by holding a commanding lion pose.

Go ahead and lie down right there...

that's good, now face the other way...

Stop hamming up to the camera and pay attention!

Looking good, you're almost there, now relax your paw and hold your head straight.

You got it!

Thank you everyone for the name suggestions, I'm spending time with the kitten and holding all the ideas in mind to see what fits him best. I'm hoping that in time he will reveal his name - in the meantime, if you have more ideas, please let me know.

Here's the kitten's current domain:

Inside the cage, he's a complete love bug. He plays and plays until he starts head bonking over and over! He's so very tame and friendly. He's been doing so good, I thought maybe he might enjoy some time outside his pen to stretch his legs, so I closed off the kitchen and let him loose.

Oh my, I quickly learned why he's here! He instantly regressed to feral-cat and completely freaked. He was terrified of me any everything and just wanted to escape. I had a devil of a time catching him and getting him back to the safe confines of his cage. Somehow I came away from this exercise with only a few scratches. Lesson learned - I need to take it much slower and let him get comfy on his terms!

  1. THAT surprised me. I would not have expected an unconfined area to freak him out like that.

  2. He is so young and still needs that safety I guess. Nahum is doing such a great job with him. Makes me smile!

  4. yep - them open spaces can be scary for new guys. Maybe next time transport him in a carrier to a bathroom (and take Nahum). and is it us or does he looks like he could be Nahum's kid?? :)

  5. Jenna lived in my very full walk-in closet (door was always open) during the day. I left her litter box, food and water nearby. She would come out and snoop during the night when it was quiet and dark. You could find the kitten would like that, too.

  6. He is just a bit nervous when out of his safe zone. I am surprised Nahum is so chilled with the door closed.

It took our Fitz a long time to be comfortable. (Fitz is from Hissy Fit) She lived in a small box for weeks and it took a lot of time for her to decide to come out. She never was active in public and finally after months of taking her to adoption days we told Dad she could join the Tomcat home. She is a joy.

  7. I missed the naming post, so here are my suggestions (I am partial to human names): Homer (since he needs a home), Hercules (I know, I'm getting all mythical) or Sampson (Sammy for short). A cat's name is important - I'm sure you will come up with a good one.
It sounds as though he needs plenty of time to acclimate and calm down. Good thing he has an excellent tutor!

  8. Nahum is quite the teacher! Our feral hid in a confined space during the day,the other cats enticed him out under cover of darkness..he got his confidence in the end.

  9. "devil of a time?" How about Diablo or Taz short for the Tasmanian Devil

  10. Adorable kitten! I am not very creative, but I'll try to think of some good names for him. I also don't have experience with feral babies, but I'm sure he'll warm up to you in time. You are a great guy and kitties just seem to know who cat people are. Just give him time, lots of love, patience, and noms :)

By the way, thank you so much for the comforting words on my blog regarding Jewel. Sometimes, I feel so alone in all of this (I took over when her former owner no longer wanted her). It's nice to be reminded that I'm not alone, that other people understand.

    *hugs*

  12. OMG, he is so cute! And Nahum is so good with him. I love seeing the 2 of them hanging out together. He is a darling. Sorry about your scratches. Nahum will have to teach you how to get along with a feral. Just kidding.
