rodent fun

Caught Pierre playing with a rodent. Sadly, it was a real one.

I thought about intervening to save the rodent's life, but before I could get very far, I noticed it was already limping pretty badly, and I figured it might be better in the long run to have Pierre dispatch it.

This activity is one of the elements of cat life that I have a hard time with. It's not so much that they hunt other critters, it's that they play with their prey before killing it. Cats have a good time while another critter suffers - seems intentionally cruel.

Pierre sure did have a good time. Thankfully he took his prize elsewhere for the final finish. Rest in peace little rodent.

  1. Poor little guy. And I don't mean Pierre. :-P

Maybe Pierre would go for a faster kill if he were starving. LOL.

  2. It's true, it looks like cruelty, but let's be happy for cats controlling the rodent population, otherwise the rodents would lead us all, outnumbering the humans :))

  3. mom read somewhere that cats actually do this as a defense - they whap prey around a little to make sure that they (the cat) aren't going to be injured by whatever they caught.....

  4. At least Pierre didn't bring you back his trophy!

  5. This is a hard one for me also. Rodents aren't as hard for me as birds....that breaks my heart. Lucky for me my Charlie is an inside cat.

  6. Hmm, very interesting what Random Felines said above! I didn't know that, but it makes sense. Our neighbor's told me that they used to have a mouse problem, but don't now because our friendly ferals are taking care of it. I've never seen either cat kill a rodent or bird, but the hubby says he's watched Sweetie catch a mouse while he watched out the window over the kitchen sink. They always show up for meals, so they can't be catching too many...???

  7. Yup, it is a defense tactic... keeping the cats safer from the mice teeth and claws.
