FREEDOM!

Not long ago I introduced you to the SureFlap Pet Door, a programmable cat door that I installed on the back porch to keep Oliver and his family secure at night. All was going well for a time, until I started coming out in the morning to feed them breakfast and discovered Oliver was gone.

It took some time to figure out how he achieved his escape. The video tells the story.

With Oliver escaping whenever he wants to, he's been getting in more fights. Oddly, I haven't heard the fights, but he's covered in cuts, scratches, and scabs. With the SureFlap Pet Door rendered useless, now I need to come up with another plan! Mouses!!

That Oliver is one clever cat! Since he's perfected his technique, he's gone on to teach Pierre and MK how to open it. So now all of them can come and go as they please. I plan to ask the manufacturer for recommendations on tips to keep clever cats from using their claws to open the door. I hope they have an answer! Oliver!!

  1. It's probably a good thing we don't have one of those doors at our place.

  2. OH man. I hate that he had that much IQ this time. Wish he had used those smarts for another purpose. He IS very smart!!!

  3. I installed a magnetic door in the bathroom for my cat who was dying of cancer and needed additional meals.. my other cats knew if they followed her in they could get food too. One time I found all eight of them in there..

  4. I fear you may have to use some old fashioned ingenuity to secure that flap.

  5. I'm smiling and laughing at how clever Oliver is! Still, the whole point is to keep them in at night and safe.......GRRRR! Good luck with fixing the problem. Clever cats indeed!

  6. while he gets smart points, good heavens..... we wonder if the old fashioned guilotine type cover might be in order....it would require someone to raise and lower it but might keep everyone safe at night.

  7. I can't count the number of times we have been out smarted by our cats.
Feline minds are amazing! It's a blessing they don't have opposable thumbs.

  8. That Oliver sure is a smarty pants which, when you think about it, is... well... well he doesn't WEAR pants! What's up with that?

PS. Oliver, sometimes the peeps do actually know best. Just sometimes, mind you, but I think in this case, they really are just tryin' to keep you safe. That's 'cause they love you, you know? Let 'em protect you. It's a good thing, for sure. purrs

  10. That Oliver is clever beyond belief! There must be a tough guy or two around, who he feels he must protect his territory from. Our Patty O'Malley had a bite wound last week, but I don't know who he's fighting with. You'd think they'd simmer down after neutering, but no! Happy New Year, and that was a great video!
