coon's revenge

The new raccoon-proof feeder is working great. Although I don't think the raccoons share my joy with how well it's working. A gang of black-masked marauding coons paid me a visit early this morning and trashed Oliver's porch to protest the new feeder.

The damage

The secured plastic bin of cat food which has a rubber seal and two latches was moved to the middle of the room and it's lid torn off. The water bowl had been tipped over and dirt was everywhere. The cats are always respectful of their shared space and would never do such a horribly rude thing. To be sure I wasn't making false accusations, I had to review the surveillance photos.

Sure enough, three of them - a full raccoon raiding party. Their black masks are a dead giveaway that they were on a thieving mission.

The one on the far left went right for the food bin while the others work their mischief.

This was obviously a well planned out raid.

Their intent is clear, these coons were not interested in peaceful exploration, they were bent on destruction and anarchy.

Guilty!

They must not have planned well for the latches as it took some time to open the bin.

After the raiding party is long gone, MK surveys the mess

Time to take "raccoon-proof" to the next level...

  4. I had my turn with the coons last month you may recall and momma had to hire a horribly expensive trapper to set the traps, bait and catch the coons..and haul them away. Since then. al is well. SO FAR. MOL. Poor Oliver. XXOO

  5. I know they have raccoon families to feed and all, but oh, they can be so nasty! The neighour husband told me he's seen them (at least once) waddling along the side of my unit. NO DOUBT making their way to the dry cat food dish!

  6. Black masks to hide their identity, they work in gangs...be careful, the ringleaders wear bandanas ,carry blades and won't be too pleased with the high security measures.

  7. Time to put a cat flap UP on the side of the house and close the porch door! Naughty thieving raccoons.

  9. Yup - time to take drastic measures. M called in a trapper a few years ago because the raccoon was making such a mess. He relocated the little bandit to the north woods. They are very cute, but very destructive.

  10. Love your blog. Raccoons, so cute, so clever & So annoying. Another solution is to put the food up on a platform that raccoons can’t climb up & can't jump to. Might slow 'em down a bit. I took your advice & don't look our new TNR'd feral in the eye. I ignore him & he doesn't run away. It's progressive. Thks

  14. I used to think that raccoons were cute until we had some super mean ones living by us. Based on your photos I would say my feelings of them being mean are spot on!

  15. Raccoon relocation sounds like a good idea! I'm just glad they weren't skunks, otherwise that would have been one stinky room!

  16. Ughh... racoons can be so destructive. I woke up one day and one was outside my bedroom window, which is 3 stories up. Scared the bejesus out of me! No idea what it was doing there but it probably wasn't good!
