melting

This is a picture of BK in my lap from this morning. He basically melted into a ball of kitty putty in my lap, purring away. No doubt that this guy remembers what it's like to receive human loves and warmth, thus he is either a lost or abandoned kittypet.

After about 20 minutes of intense lap snuggles, I had to extract him from my lap so I could get off to work. He didn't want to leave my lap. My current plan is to make an appointment at the vet for Monday morning. Then each morning and evening, I will spend as much time with him as I can to keep building the trust so come Monday I can either carry him in my arms or put him in a carrier (vet's office is literally across the alley from my backyard).

Thanks everyone for your encouraging and supportive words, they have been helpful to me as I figure out how best to help BK.

  4. Absolutely wonderful news! I'd still put BK in a carrier. I have one cat who loves my lap but does not like to be picked up or carried. I adopted her from a no kill shelter nearly 3 years ago.

  5. Lucy: To clarify, BK is not inside yet, I was sitting in the yard with him in my lap when I took the picture. He still needs to be screened for infectious diseases before I let him near my cats. Hopefully he passes those tests and then I can more easily work on finding him a forever home!

  9. I'm trying to decide who's doing the most melting here. BK or you? This is truly touching. It's wonderful what you've accomplished with him.

  14. I am so relieved and happy that BK is doing okay and you have been able to establish contact. Now taking him to the vet will be less traumatizing since you won't need to trap him first. It's great that he's beginning to trust you and just goes to show you how affectionate and wonderful cats are! What a big suck! :)

  15. Yay!!! I think this boy's got a bright future--if not with you, then ub some other loving home. He's clearly going to love right back. It's wonderful what you're doing...

  16. Congratulations!!! That is very good news. It was easier getting him indoors than expected. Now he will be warm and loved and never hungry again. What more could a kitty ask for.
Good luck with your new family addition.

  17. From the Clowder's Dad: You'll probably want to put BK in a carrier, even if it is just across the street. Safer, in case BK freaks out when you get close to the vet. Also, it separates you from the vet a bit more. A few years ago, I had an adopted stray that I could pick up and carry, until I took him to the vet that way one time. (for his neuter, mostly) He would still hang out with me, but he never let me pick him up again.

I found him a nice home, but they tell me he still won't let anyone pick him up.
